My 3 year anniversary with NYC (and three lessons I learned)

[Traducción al español ABAJO]

3 years ago I arrived at JFK from Buenos Aires with 4 bags full of clothes, shoes and random stuff and a million dreams in my head.

After day-dreaming about this days for months (maybe years?) I was finally here: NYC.

I was so excited but at the same time so so scared cause I had taken the craziest decision in my life but probably also the one that had made me the happiest: I had left everything I had owned and know about in Buenos Aires, Argentina and decided to start a new chapter in my favorite city.

Three years later I feel like some quotes, songs and phrases have stuck with me, and if you are thinking about moving to New York… well, you might as well give these a read:

“Everybody here wanted something’ more / Everybody here was someone else before” – Taylor Swift

When “Welcome to New York” was released in October 2014, I had just come from a 3-day trip to the city where I fell again in love with it, coming back after several years.

It was the first time I was able to picture myself there, the first time that I felt more alive being there than anywhere else in the world. It was the time I sort of realized I HAD to be there, because somehow it was meant to be.

So when I was finally in New York two years after that, TS song felt more real than ever.

I was here because I wanted something more, I was literally someone else before, with a different career path, and different ideas for my future.

I was in NYC looking for a different life, and I feel like in some way everyone that comes to NYC from another city is like that which takes me to…

“These streets will make you feel brand new / Big lights will inspire you” – Alicia Keys

NYC has somehow the ability of making you feel different.

It’s probably the most crazy but amazing city I’ve ever been in, and at the same time you can feel so small but so big.

But at the same time it is the city of opportunities, where you truly don’t know who you might bump into in the subway, at a coffee shop or waiting in line for an event.

NYC has surprised me in the biggest way, and has made me believe that you really become a new version of yourself here, more mature, more ambitious, more inspired to go after what you want.

And in fact…

“If I can make it there / I’ll make it anywhere” – Frank Sinatra

This quote couldn’t be more truer.

New York is the city where you go to make your dreams come true, the city where anything is possible, but at the same time the place where the best people in the world go to, to prove they are in fact the best.

NYC is tough, and you have to work your butt off to achieve what you want, to truly get where you want to be, but when you are finally there, it feels better than anything else, cause you know you’ve worked hard for everything you have.

And finally, “Don’t move to New York unless you’re ready to fall in love.” – Jen Glantz

This city is tough, people here hustle like nowhere else in the whole world, and some days you will feel like things are way too hard and you are almost ready to give up.

But New York will find ways to give you hope: unexpected words from strangers, crazy emails that you never thought would come through or opportunities you never ever thought possible even in your wildest dreams.

So… yeah. Don’t move here, please don’t move here, unless you’re ready to fall in love. Because you will. And it will be fabulous and it will be scary and it will be unlike anything you’ve ever loved before.

And trust me, you will never ever want to leave.

Happy 3 years to me & NYC <3
